What is a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)?

An abdominoplasty, more commonly called a “tummy tuck”, is one of the most popular surgical cosmetic procedures in the world due to its transformative results. The procedure removes stretched or sagging skin of the stomach and provides a tighter, more attractive appearance. This surgery is typically sought out by those with overstretched skin due to pregnancy or excessive weight loss, because it’s very difficult to address these issues when pregnancy or weight loss are the causes. Exercise and diet have very little impact, and often surgery is the best option.

Key benefits of a tummy tuck

  • Improves the appearance of loose, sagging skin on the abdomen
  • Restores weakened or separated muscles
  • Achieves a more contoured stomach
  • Addresses the “C-section scar bulge” that can appear underneath clothing
  • Can help with conditions such as hernias, urinary incontinence, posture, bloating, and back discomfort

Abdominoplasty surgical details

Dr. Bauer performs abdominoplasty with the patient under general anesthesia, and it takes anywhere from 1 to 5 hours. Dr. Bauer will carefully create an incision along the bikini line in order to remove the excess skin while also minimizing the visibility of future scarring.

The skin is then disconnected from the underlying tissue and “tucked” together for a natural, toned appearance. Some patients also need muscle repair. If this is the case, Dr. Bauer will restore the muscles to their natural position with permanent internal sutures.

Liposuction may also need to be incorporated into your tummy tuck surgery. If so, Dr. Bauer will discuss this with you during your consultation.
