More than just a surgery

Breast augmentation isn’t just a surgery; it’s also an art. It requires the eye, experience, and expertise of a skilled surgeon who understands how the implants chosen should match with a patient’s specific body type, medical history, and lifestyle. At Alabama Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. John Bauer performs highly customized breast augmentation and breast revision surgeries that are personalized to each unique patient to achieve the best outcome possible.

What can a breast augmentation do?

  • Enhance the size of the breasts
  • Adjust asymmetrical or uneven breasts
  • Provide better body proportion
  • Restore lost volume that has resulted from breastfeeding or weight loss
  • Elevate self-esteem, self-image, and confidence

What to expect in your consultation

Your first meeting with Dr. Bauer is one of the most important parts of your breast augmentation process. This is because it’s the time and place in which you and the doctor will form your unique treatment plan based on the type of implants you’ll be getting, as well as going over your questions and concerns. The following will be covered during your consultation:

  • Your goals for the breast augmentation
  • Your questions and concerns
  • A physical exam
  • The right type of implant for your body and lifestyle
  • A step-by-step of the surgery
  • Placement and type of incisions
  • Placement of implants
  • Complete cost of surgery
  • What to expect during recovery
  • How to care for yourself during recovery
  • When you’ll see results

Different types of implants

There is no “main implant” that works for everyone. Breast implants come in many varieties, so there’s an ideal kind for everyone. To find out which one is right for you, Dr. Bauer will closely and carefully work with you. Some of the options to go over are saline or silicone; anatomical or round; smooth or textured, and then of course, different sizes.

Breast augmentation surgery details

Dr. Bauer performs breast augmentation in Montgomery AL with the patient under general anesthesia, and the procedure takes 1 to 2 hours. He will very carefully make incisions and insert the breast implants either behind the breast tissue or underneath the chest muscle. Both the placement of the incisions and the implant will be discussed and decided upon during your consultation.

Recovery and aftercare

You will need a friend or family member to help you for at least 24 hours after surgery. While it’s important to rest, make sure you are also keeping your blood flow moving to prevent clots. Most patients are given a surgical bra to wear after a breast augmentation to assist with healing. This will need to be worn for about one week, and then you may switch to a soft, no-underwire bra.

Be sure to fully take off enough time to allow your body to heal after a breast augmentation. The majority of patients require about one week off of work, unless their job is physically demanding. (In that case, 3 to 4 weeks should be taken off.) By two months, you should be fully recovered. Dr. Bauer will let you know when exercise may be resumed.

Candidates for breast augmentation

If you’re considering breast augmentation, ALPRS is home to one of the best body plastic surgeons in the Montgomery, AL area, Dr. John Bauer.

He will help you determine if breast augmentation is right for you, but in general, ideal candidates for this procedure are those who:

  • Have fully developed breasts
  • Are bothered by the size, shape, or asymmetry of their breasts
  • Are non-smokers in overall good health
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic expectations for what a breast augmentation can do

Breast revision surgery

Dr. Bauer also performs breast revision surgery, which is a procedure that is done to either replace old implants or correct problems resulting from implants/breast surgery. The most common reasons for a patient undergoing a revision surgery are

  • Capsular contracture (hardening of the implant)
  • Implant deflation or rupture
  • Visible rippling or wrinkling under the skin
  • Abnormal scarring
  • Results are not aesthetically pleasing
  • Implants are uncomfortable
  • Implant displacement
  • Implants older than ten years
  • Symmastia (implants joined together)
  • Asymmetry due to a previous cosmetic or reconstructive breast surgery

Breast revision requires a highly experienced surgeon, as there are many elements that they may need to contend with — including scar tissue, mistakes that the previous physician made, and the emotions of the patient.
