What is breast revision?

Breast revision surgery is performed to improve the results from a previous breast augmentation. Many women decide to have a breast revision because they’re disappointed in their results, problems have developed, or because the implants have gotten old. At ALPRS, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John Bauer expertly performs this complex procedure, which requires the skill and experience of a breast specialist.

What to expect in your consultation

Your consultation will be one of the most important parts of your breast revision, because it will give you the opportunity to describe exactly why you’re unhappy with your previous breast surgery — and your goals for the revision. Dr. Bauer will take your medical history, perform a physical exam, answer your questions and concerns, and take you step-by-step through the entire procedure and recovery process. It’s very important to us to educate you on your surgery and what to expect.

Common reasons to have a breast revision

Desire for different implants

Some women simply aren’t happy with the implants that were originally chosen. They may be too large or too small, uncomfortable or unattractive.

Old implants

As implants get old, they may shift and change, resulting in an unwanted appearance. In this case, most women choose to replace them.

Capsular contracture

This is a condition in which scar tissue develops around the implant, and can result in the implant becoming hard and losing its shape.

Implant displacement

Sometimes implants can shift and move around, causing not only discomfort but an off-balance appearance.

Scarring

If the previous surgeon was not careful, unsightly scars may have been left behind. A breast revision can address this problem.

Implant rupture or deflation

Although implants are designed to be quite durable, rupture or deflation is possible.

Rippling and wrinkling

It’s important that an implant “matches” a woman’s skin and body type. If it doesn’t, it can result in a rippled or wrinkled appearance underneath the skin.

Symmastia

Symmastia is a condition that happens when the two implants merge together in the center of the chest. This is not only unattractive; it’s also uncomfortable.

Poor results

Sometimes the previous surgeon just doesn’t do a good job, and the breasts don’t look right. Many women are happy with their implants, but they still aren’t satisfied with the outcome. Whether the problem is asymmetry, scars, or anything else, Dr. Bauer can help.

Breast revision surgery details

Because every specific breast revision case is different, the details of your personal surgery and recovery will depend on your unique condition. However, in general, a breast revision removes (and possibly replaces), repairs, or re-shape the implant(s). Often, scar tissue also needs to be removed.

Recovery and results

Just as the surgery will vary from patient to patient, so will the recovery. However, breast revision patients usually need about a month to fully recover, with about three weeks off of work. During your consultation, we can give you a more specific estimate of recovery time.
