How the eyes age

The skin around the eye area is particularly thin, making it more vulnerable to age than many parts of the body. This is why our eyes tend to give away our age so early on. Issues like heavy eyelids, fine lines, eye bags, and hollowness in the tear troughs make the entire face look tired, sad, or old. Many individuals also experience vision problems due to excess skin around the eyes.

FAQ

What is the right age to get eyelid surgery?

Although eyelid surgery can be performed on anyone over the age of 18, it’s particularly effective for patients who are in their 30s or older.

What are the best procedures to add to an eyelid lift?

Blepharoplasty is often combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as periocular rejuvenation (see below), a brow lift, facelift, Botox®, or dermal fillers.

Periocular rejuvenation

We offer procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, to address the following areas of concern and rejuvenate the area.

Under-eye bags

Puffiness under the eyes is a result of the tissues and muscles around the area weakening with age, as well as fat migration. This is a bothersome issue for many individuals who have a hard time concealing it.

Malar mounds

These unsightly bumps develop at the top of the cheekbone as the cheek below begins to migrate downward. Malar mounds tend to draw the eye and distract from other facial features, and can cause the face to look more aged than it is.

Tear troughs

Tear troughs are one of the most noticeable signs of age on the face, and broadcast a sad or exhausted appearance. These deep creases, located between the lower eyelid and upper cheek, create dark shadows which take away from the beauty of the eyes.

Blepharoplasty surgical details

At Alabama Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, blepharoplasty is performed by either Dr. Raggio or Dr. Cawthon, our facial plastic surgery experts. This procedure is done with the patient under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with mild sedation, and takes 1 to 2 hours to complete. The surgery can be performed on the upper lids only; the lower lids only; together, or in conjunction with other rejuvenation procedures.

For upper eyelid surgery, the incisions are made in the natural folds of the eyelids, which makes them nearly impossible to see once they’re healed. From this incision, fat and excess skin will be removed or re-adjusted, and the skin will be tightened to reduce wrinkles and smooth the skin. The incisions will then be carefully closed with sutures. For lower eyelid surgery, incisions are made within the lower eyelids or beneath the eyelash line.

Recovery and results

The majority of blepharoplasty patients require approximately one week off of work and regular activities. After one week, the sutures can be removed. You may experience side effects including discomfort, blurred vision, redness, “tired” or dry eyes, swelling, and/or bruising. These are all temporary. During recovery, it’s important to avoid wearing contact lenses. Most patients see their results at about six weeks after surgery.
