Hair transplantation for men and women

Dr. Raggio has specialty training in both follicular unit extraction and follicular unit hair transplantation, making him the ideal choice for both men and women suffering from undesirable alopecia (hair loss). As a member of the American Board of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Raggio is an expert in the field of aesthetics, and applies this directly to his work in hair transplant. He is the only surgeon offering hair transplantation in Montgomery, AL.

Male hair transplant

The most common cause of male hair loss is genetics; however, there are many other reasons why this condition may happen (medications, an unhealthy lifestyle, stress, physical changes, hormonal changes, scalp disorders, poor diet, trauma, etc.). For the majority of men, hair loss begins at the temples and the “front” of the head in their 30s and 40s: the dreaded receding hairline. From this point on, without treatment the hair follicles will continue to shrink and decline with time until they can no longer grow hair at all. This is why we are so happy to offer male hair transplantation methods such as FUT or FUE surgery (see below).

Female hair transplant

While hair loss is mostly associated with men, women also experience this issue, and it can have a devastating effect on their self-esteem. It can strike at any age for a wide variety of reasons, including stress, pregnancy, unhealthy eating and crash dieting, genetics, medications (including some birth controls), certain diseases, menopause, an iron deficiency, and even some kinds of hairstyles. Because hair loss can create emotional and confidence problems for many women, we’re happy to offer female hair transplantation. See below for our techniques.

Follicular unit transplant (FUT)

Follicular unit transplant, also known as the “strip method”, is a technique of hair transplant in which an entire strip of hair is removed from the back of the scalp. This does leave behind a linear scar on the back of the head, but this method is preferred by many because of its high follicle survival rate and cost effectiveness. It’s also not a problem for those who wear their hair longer, as it can be hidden by the hair. Once the strip of hair is removed, it’s divided into a series of hair grafts which are implanted (1 to 4 hairs at a time) into target areas where the hair is balding or thinning.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE)

Follicular unit extraction (FUE surgery) is a hair restoration transplant technique that removes individual hair follicle units from the back of the head instead of one long strip (like the FUT method above). Many patients prefer this technique because it doesn’t leave behind a linear scar on the back of the head, which allows the freedom to wear the hair very short if desired. The hair follicle units each contain approximately 1 to 4 hairs, and these are removed with a small device that makes tiny “punches” into the scalp. Once the follicles have been removed and prepped for grafting, a needle-point device will make tiny recipient sites in the areas where more hair growth is desired. The hair follicles will then be implemented into these areas in a natural-looking pattern. Because patients will have received anesthesia before treatment, any pain or discomfort is very minimal.

Facial hair and beard transplant

For those who are bothered by their patchy, uneven beard or perhaps want to hide a scar or birthmark — but can’t seem to grow facial hair to adequate satisfaction — we can help. The Alabama Center for Hair Restoration can provide hair restoration for a beard, mustache, sideburns, or eyebrows. Our procedures are ideal for individuals who:

  • Are not able to grow a robust beard, mustache, or sideburns
  • Would like to conceal a facial scar or birthmark with hair
  • Want fuller, thicker eyebrows

Facial hair restoration is most commonly achieved with the FUT or FUE surgery hair transplant methods. The hair to be transplanted is typically taken from the scalp at the nape of the neck or underneath the chin to be transplanted.

For many men, facial hair is an important feature. It’s always a matter of taste and preference, but facial hair is often associated with virility and masculinity. This is why we’re here to help if you’re interested in a facial hair transplant.

Eyebrow transplant

Many individuals see their eyebrows as a trouble spot. Many women tend to over-pluck their eyebrows in their youth, which can result in sparse, patchy eyebrows. Asymmetry is also a common issue. While cosmetic tattooing can sometimes be an option, many women prefer something more natural-looking — and permanent. An eyebrow transplant is both of these.

The FUT or FUE surgery methods are also used for eyebrow transplantation to achieve fuller, thicker eyebrows. The hair follicles are removed from the back of the neck, the back of the scalp, or just above the ears.

It’s important to work with an experienced hair transplant expert like Dr. Raggio, as the procedure takes an artist’s eye to deliver the right amount of arch and the correct pattern, as well as understanding the nuances between male and female eyebrows.
