Hair restoration by Dr. Raggio

Dr. Blake Raggio has specialty training in hair restoration, both in surgical and non-surgical techniques. Using a highly customized approach, Dr. Raggio doesn’t simply place grafts or administer injections on autopilot; rather, he considers every patient as a unique case. He takes into consideration their specific type of hair loss to determine the right placement, and factors in elements such as the hairline in order to appropriately compliment the face.

What are my hair restoration options?

At the Alabama Center for Hair Restoration at ALPRS, we offer the following hair services:

  • Hair transplant (FUE and FUT)
  • Facial hair transplant
  • Hairline lowering / forehead shortening
  • Platelet-rich plasma and platelet-rich fibrin treatments
  • Medical-grade hair restoration medications

FUT (follicular unit transplant)

Follicular unit transplant or the “strip method” removes a healthy strip of hair from the back of the scalp. While this leaves behind a linear scar on the head, this method does have a high survival rate for the hair follicles. Once the strip of hair is removed from the back of the head, it is divided into a series of hair grafts which are implanted into areas on the head where the hair is balding or thinning, 1 to 4 hairs at a time.

FUE (follicular unit extraction)

Instead of removing a long strip of hair like FUT, follicular unit extraction instead removes individual hair follicle units from the back of the head. This is a popular method due to the fact that it allows freedom to wear very short haircuts, as there’s no scar left afterward. The hair follicles are removed with a small “punch” device and implemented into the needed areas in a natural-looking pattern.

What’s better: FUE or FUT?

While we typically recommend FUE as the best technique for hair restoration however, each patient is different and there are sometimes reasons that a patient may be better suited for FUT hair transplantation. See the table below to learn more about the advantages of FUE as compared to FUT.

Follicular unit transplant

  • Performed under mild oral or IV sedation, plus local anesthetic
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Surgical procedure (6- to 8-inch scalpel incision and stitches required)
  • The procedure time varies depending on the amount of grafts to be transplanted, but is typically 25% shorter than a FUE hair transplant
  • Because of the shorter procedure time, FUT is typically more cost-effective
  • Mild to moderate discomfort during recovery
  • Patients are usually able to return to work within 3 to 5 days
  • Average recovery time is 2 to 3 weeks
  • A fine scar is left behind in the donor area, which may be slightly visible if head is shaved
  • Transplanted follicles will be dormant for 3 to 4 months, and will then begin producing new hair
  • Noticeable results can be expected in 9 to 12 months

Follicular unit extraction

  • Performed under mild oral or IV sedation, plus local anesthetic
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Minimally invasive surgical procedure (only micro-incisions required in recipient site for placement of hair grafts; no stitches or scarring)
  • Procedure time varies depending on the amount of grafts to be transplanted, but may require 8 to 10 hours or more
  • Because of the extended procedure time and tedious nature of harvesting hair grafts one-by-one, FUE is typically more costly than FUT
  • Little to no post-operative discomfort during recovery
  • Most patients able to return to work the next day
  • Average recovery time is 5 to 7 days
  • Extraction areas are typically undetectable once healed, even with head shaved
  • Transplanted follicles will lay dormant for 3 to 4 months, and will then begin producing new hair
  • Noticeable results can be expected in 9 to 12 months

Facial hair transplant

If your facial hair is lackluster, Dr. Raggio offers restoration and transplantation services to help make your beard, eyebrows, mustache, and sideburns thicker, more robust, and healthier-looking.

Forehead shortening

If you’re one of the many individuals who is bothered by a large forehead, we provide hairline lowering surgery to achieve a more balanced, less distracting forehead.

PRP hair restoration

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) — found within your very own blood — contains many growth factors that, when injected into the scalp, have the ability to trigger dormant hair follicles into a new growth phase.

Hair restoration medications

We’re happy to offer medical-grade topical products, shampoos, oral supplements, and light-based therapy to help get your hair growing and healthy.

How much does a hair transplant cost in Montgomery?

The cost of a hair transplant is made up of several factors that vary from patient to patient — so there is no “set” cost. Some patients may have one bald spot that bothers them, while another has thinning hair all over their head. This is why Dr. Raggio will need to meet with you in consultation. After examining your hair, deciding on the size of the transplantation area, which method to use, and whether PRP injections will be involved, he will be able to give you the exact cost.

What to expect in your consultation

The very first step in your hair restoration journey is your initial meeting with Dr. Raggio. It’s during this meeting that he will listen carefully and closely to your concerns and questions, as well as educate you on all your options. He will examine your hair and recommend what he feels to be the best treatment for your specific type of hair loss and needs. Once a course of treatment has been established, he will design your personalized treatment plan and go over costs with you.
