FAQ

Are dermal fillers better for those who are younger or older?

The answer is that dermal fillers are an excellent option for everyone. If you’re in your mid 20s, dermal fillers can help address things you may dislike about your appearance, such as thin lips or small problems with your nose. You begin to lose your natural collagen in your mid 20s, so this is a great time to begin undergoing maintenance treatments. By starting in your 20s, you’ll need less treatment down the road.

On the other hand, dermal fillers are also very effective for older patients — even those in their 60s. Issues associated with aging such as fine lines around the mouth and nasolabial folds can be greatly improved with facial fillers. There is a wide range of options available for patients of nearly any age.

Juvéderm

Juvéderm® is line of FDA-approved facial fillers made from hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring substance within our body that keeps our skin hydrated, plump, elastic, and youthful). The Juvéderm family includes quite a variety of excellent products, each one formulated to address different concerns:

  • Juvéderm Ultra: Mainly used for lip augmentation, this filler delivers a very natural appearance. This product is also an excellent choice for mild to moderate wrinkles and subtle volume enhancement. Juvéderm Ultra usually last 6 to 9 months.
  • Juvéderm Ultra Plus: The “plus” comes from the fact that this product has a thicker gel than Juvéderm Ultra; therefore it’s better for patients with deeper wrinkles. It also provides more robust volume for the cheeks or jaw areas, and lasts longer (approximately 9 to 12 months).
  • Juvéderm Voluma: Made with the thickest and strongest gel that Juvéderm has available, Voluma is ideal for volumizing the cheeks and for achieving a more prominent chin. Results last up to two years.
  • Juvéderm Volbella: Opposite of Voluma, Juvéderm Volbella is made with the line’s thinnest gel — making it also the most spreadable. The fact that it’s so spreadable means that it’s perfect for addressing very subtle lines (like “smoker’s lines” around the mouth), or the thin skin underneath the eyes. It’s also a great filler for soft, subtle, natural-looking lip enhancement. Volbella can last for up to 18 months.
  • Juvéderm Vollure: Juvéderm Vollure is made of a medium gel that’s great for addressing deep wrinkles, marionette lines, and nasolabial folds at the mouth. Vollure lasts up to 18 months.

Restylane

Arguably the most popular dermal filler in the world, Restylane® is another line of FDA-approved dermal filler products that cover a broad range of aesthetic concerns. Although Restylane is also made from hyaluronic acid, it’s different than Juvéderm because of its granular structure. This structure means that it’s able to “stay put” more easily than Juvéderm, which makes it especially good for adding volume to hollow or sunken areas of the face. It’s also very moldable, which helps your specialist contour your face more easily.

  • Restylane: The original Restylane formula improves moderate to severe facial wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and thin lips. Mostly used for the under-eye area, it’s often combined with other Restylane products to achieve enhanced results. Restylane lasts approximately 10 months.
  • Restylane-L: Restylane-L is similar to Restylane, but it has the added element of lidocaine to help alleviate discomfort during the injections. It’s a great choice for adding volume to the skin and improving the appearance of moderate to severe skin wrinkles and folds. Restylane-L lasts 5 to 7 months.
  • Restylane Lyft: Able to support quite a lot of tissue, Restylane Lyft is well known for its lifting effect for sagging skin and volumizing capability for hollow areas of the face. As one of Restylane’s strongest products, Lyft is also ideal for deep wrinkle treatment. Lyft lasts for up to 18 months.
  • Restylane Refyne and Defyne: Restylane Refyne and Defyne are very flexible substances, and have been developed to improve the appearance of laugh lines. Refyne is for more moderate lines, while Defyne is made of a thicker gel and is better for more severe laugh lines. Both products last up to 18 months.
  • Restylane Silk: Made of a very thin gel, Restylane Silk is an ideal product to address fine lines in delicate areas such as underneath the eyes. Because it’s such a thin gel, it’s an ideal option for patients who want a very subtle, natural-looking change. It’s most often used for slight lip augmentation and mild hollowness. Restylane Silk lasts for 6 to 10 months.
  • Restylane Kysse: This one is just for the lips! Restylane Kysse not only adds a beautiful fullness; it also enhances lip color and smooths “smoker’s lines” around the mouth. Kysse was created with XpresHAn Technology™ to give it very flexible movement and natural-looking volume for even better results. Kysse can last up to 12 months.

Radiesse

Made from calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres in a soft gel, Radiesse provides structural support underneath the skin when injected. It also kickstarts the production of new collagen, so those who use Radiesse actually get a two-in-one treatment: added volume and brand-new collagen. Radiesse lasts for 1 to 3 years (depending on the treatment area), and has the ability to:

  • Lift sagging facial skin
  • Provide youthful volume to the face
  • Soften nasolabial folds and marionette lines
  • Achieve more definition for lax jowls
  • Lift downturned corners of the mouth

Belotero

Belotero® is particularly effective at improving very fine lines and wrinkles (which can often be fairly difficult to treat) because it’s made of a low-density gel. Excellent for mild to deep lines and lip enhancement; lasts up to six months.

Revanesse Versa

Revanesse® Versa™ is an excellent dermal filler for lip contouring and moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. It’s easy to mold, and because of its spherical particle structure, it has a very smooth quality that looks and feels very natural under the skin. In addition, Versa has 24% less swelling than other facial fillers.

The RHA Collection

The RHA® Collection by Revance® is the first and only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler for dynamic facial wrinkles. Developed to adapt to the movements of the face while simultaneously addressing lines and wrinkles, The RHA Collection is made of a unique, highly advanced formula that delivers longer-lasting, more natural-looking results.

It adds volume to dermal tissue with an innovative combination of elasticity and strength. There is definitely a reason that the RHA Collection has been named one of the Top In-Office Treatment Trends of 2021.
