Botox, Dysport, Xeomin

Botox, Dysport®, and Xeomin® are all made from Botulinum toxin A and work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that make wrinkles form. These non-invasive products are a great way to freshen your facial appearance without having to undergo surgery. In fact, they are so quick and convenient that many individuals incorporate them regularly into their anti-aging routine.

Commonly treated issues with neuromodulators

Overall, neuromodulators can change your expression from severe and/or concerned to vibrant and refreshed. They have the ability to reduce:

  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet
  • Horizontal forehead creases
  • Fine lines above the lips
  • Creases on the nose bridge (“bunny lines”)
  • Frown lines
  • Chin dimpling
  • Future wrinkles

How neuromodulators work

Neuromodulators block the communication from the nerve cell to the muscles. This means that when the nerve tries to tell the muscle to contract, the muscle doesn’t get the message — and therefore doesn’t contract, i.e., make a wrinkle.

FAQ

What is the most common age for people to start using neuromodulators?

Although you have to be at least 18 to have treatment, there is no “set” age for using neuromodulators. Patients as young as their early 20s love to use them to prevent wrinkles from forming, and they can continue being beneficial for patients up into their older age.

What’s the difference between neurotoxins and dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers and neuromodulators both work to lessen wrinkles and achieve a more youthful appearance, but they work differently. When injected, dermal fillers add volume underneath the skin by literally filling the area. Neuromodulators, when injected, block the nerve signals so that the wrinkle-causing muscles cannot move as much. both are very effective, and your preference for treatment will come down to experience with each product.

What’s the difference between Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau?

While Botox is the most well-known neuromodulator, there are others that are excellent products. At Montgomery MedSpa, we also offer Dysport and Xeomin along with Botox, and one of the most commonly asked questions is what the difference is between them. Which neuromodulator is best for you?

Another great question we often get asked is, “Which one is right for me:  Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin?” This will be determined by factors including your medical history and specific allergies, what your personal aesthetic goals are, if you’ve had luck with neuromodulators in the past, the strength of your muscles and quality of your skin, how much relaxation you want, and the expert opinion of your specialist at Montgomery MedSpa. This, along with your questions and concerns, can all be discussed during your consultation.

Neuromodulator treatment details

We recommend that you stop taking any kind of blood thinners for two weeks prior to the treatment. This will help you bruise and bleed less. Blood thinners include alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, St. John’s wort, and vitamin E.

We provide a topical anesthetic if you prefer, as some patients can feel slight pinching or pressure during the injections. They will be administered just below the skin’s surface in precisely the right areas, using a fine needle. As soon as the product is administered, it will begin to relax the targeted muscle and decrease its mobility.

The length of your treatment will depend on how many areas are being addressed and how many units are being administered. In general, it takes less than five minutes to treat each area.

Downtime and aftercare

One of the best things about neuromodulators is that they require very little downtime. Most patients go right back to their regular day after their appointment. However, it is important to avoid reclining or lying down for at least four hours. It’s also important to be careful and delicate with your face for the next few days, and to refrain from exercise during this time as well. There may be some slight redness, bruising, and/or swelling at the injection site.
