Microneedling with PRP

Microneedling is a very popular, minimally invasive skin treatment that uses tiny needles (about 0.75 to 2.5 mm in length) to penetrate thousands of microscopic “wounds” into the skin. These wounds trigger the body’s natural healing process, which means that new collagen and elastin are created to repair the skin. This new collagen and elastin give the skin a smoother, healthier, younger appearance.

PRP helps to elevate the results of microneedling. PRP is platelet-rich plasma, and it comes from your very own blood. When used in conjunction with microneedling, PRP helps the tiny wounds made from the micro-needles heal more quickly, which causes the skin to produce even more collagen while evening out the skin’s texture and tone.

What microneedling can improve

  • Rosacea
  • Fine lines
  • Sun damage
  • Crepey skin
  • Large pores
  • Loose skin
  • Age spots
  • Enlarged pores
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Dull skin
  • Scars (acne and other)
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Stretch marks

The PRP + microneedling treatment

Before treatment begins, your skin will be cleansed and prepped, and you will be given a topical anesthetic to help minimize any discomfort during the microneedling portion of the procedure. A small amount of blood will be drawn from a vein, and will then be put into a spinning device (centrifuge) to separate the red blood cells from the platelet-rich plasma.

Once the plasma has been separated, it will be placed into a syringe so that it can be incorporated into the microneedling. Now it’s time for the microneedling to start. The hand-held instrument (which houses the micro-needles) will pass over your skin multiple times, creating tiny wounds each time.

The plasma will be administered into your skin during this process. Once the microneedling is complete, your face will be red and look a bit scratched up, and you may also experience pinpoint bleeding for the rest of the day.

Recovery and results

After your treatment, it’s best that you don’t use any products on your skin for the remainder of the day — even just soap. This is so that the treatment can “set in” and truly work.

While downtime is very minimal with microneedling and PRP, some patients experience irritated skin and redness for a few days. Any bleeding or scratches should subside within 24 hours, but your skin will be very sensitive to UV rays, so be sure to wear sunscreen if you go outdoors.

Results should become noticeable in 1 to 2 weeks. To maintain these results, most patients require multiple sessions. During your consultation, we can give you a more specific idea of how many treatments you may need for optimal outcome.
